In this guide

Both livebait and lures can catch kingfish. Livebait takes preparation and care; lures let you choose and repeat an artificial presentation. The better starting point depends on the fish you find and the way you want to fish.

What does the local guidance say?

The Victorian Fisheries Authority identifies live fish and squid as kingfish baits, including mackerel and yakkas. It also describes jigging and casting lures as options. That supports carrying more than one method, rather than assuming kingfish must be caught one particular way.

Kingfish can still be frustrating when you know they are present. Seeing a fish does not tell you it will accept your next bait or lure.

Bait gathering deserves its own time

A sabiki rig and a way to handle the bait you catch are part of the preparation. Allow time for gathering bait instead of assuming it will be available immediately.

If keeping bait alive is not practical for your trip, that affects your plan. If you already have suitable bait and a way to present it effectively, there is no need to abandon it just because you also brought lures.

Where surface lures fit

Surface casting is one option within kingfish fishing. It makes sense to consider a Suave when you specifically want its surface presentation and your outfit suits its rigged weight. A deep-water presentation needs a method designed to reach that depth.

For casting lures versus jigs, read our kingfish lure guide. For different surface presentations, compare poppers and stickbaits.
