In this guide

A popper is generally chosen for surface disturbance. A stickbait offers a different swimming presentation, with floating and sinking versions covering different jobs. Neither name tells you everything about how an individual lure behaves.

Start with what you want the lure to do, then choose the model and tackle that let you do it.

The practical difference

Lure typeWhat to look for before buying
PopperThe disturbance it produces and the rod movement needed to create it
Floating stickbaitHow it sits at rest, swims on the pull and responds to a pause
Sinking stickbaitSink behaviour, working depth and the retrieve that brings it to life
Surface hybridA demonstration of its actual action rather than assumptions based on its name

There is variation inside every category. Two lures with similar silhouettes can feel quite different on the same rod.

What about Victorian kingfish?

In his account of surface fishing for Victorian kingfish, Scott Gray describes using poppers to search and switching to stickbaits for a subtler option or when chop makes his popper difficult to work. That is a useful example of changing presentation to suit what is happening, rather than declaring one style the winner.

It is an angler’s experience, not a guarantee for every lure or session.

Learn one lure before constantly swapping

Make a few short casts where you can see the lure. Try a controlled pull, then allow it to settle. Change the length and pace of the next pull. Watch which movements produce a clean, repeatable action.

This is a practical way to learn your particular lure. It also helps you notice when a change in hardware or tackle changes its behaviour. Follow any rigging and retrieve guidance supplied by its maker.

Where does the Suave sit?

JSL describes the Suave as a pencil-popper hybrid. Its intended presentation combines controlled splash and glide. Choose it because that is the action you want to fish, and match its size to your outfit.

If you are comparing lures online, action footage is more useful than a label alone. Look for a clear view of the retrieve, including the pauses, rather than only the strike.

Compare the two Suave sizes or browse the range.
