Metal lures are a practical starting point for casting at Australian salmon from Victorian surf beaches. In estuaries, smaller soft plastics offer another option. Choose for the water you are fishing before choosing a brand.

Beach, estuary or offshore?

The Victorian Fisheries Authority recommends metal slices for active surf fishing and small soft plastics for smaller to medium salmon in estuaries. It also identifies metal lures as an option around offshore headlands. These are different settings, so packing one lure for every situation can limit your options.

For Western Port specifically, the VFA lists metal lures and soft plastics among the active casting methods for Australian salmon. You do not need to turn every salmon session into a heavy topwater outfit.

What should you check before buying?

  • The casting weight: match the complete rigged lure to your rod’s stated range.
  • The presentation: decide whether you need a surface lure or an option that fishes below it.
  • The profile: look at the bait and fish you can observe rather than assuming a longer lure is always better.
  • The practical cost: buy something you are comfortable fishing in the setting you have chosen.

Does a Suave belong in a salmon kit?

The Suave is a specialised surface option, and it should be assessed on that basis. For general salmon fishing, compact metals and small soft plastics remain useful starting points. The larger Suave 210 should not be treated as the default choice simply because it is the bigger model.

If you are considering a Suave for a particular salmon surface session, ask JSL about suitability for your rod and intended presentation. A specific recommendation should be backed by a suitable setup and real testing, not just the fact that a lure is available to buy.

Start with the session you actually plan to fish

For a general salmon session, begin with the established lure types that fit the water. If you later want to explore a particular surface presentation, make that a deliberate addition. Choosing the right job for a lure is more useful than expecting one purchase to cover everything.
